1. Parents with OCD

As many of you know, Dr. Gorbis and I have worked closely in the past with the people at the ABC News 20/20 television show. They have been very helpful in getting the message on OCD and its treatments out to many people around the world. They have an excellent record of doing good work to advance the cause of OCD, and we both have faith in their ability to sensitively and accurately handle the subject matter of OCD. Nancy Gamerman, who works with the 20/20 show on the matter of mental health issues has asked us to post the following notice.

Do you find your rituals and obsessions are severely interfering with how you raise your children? Does your OCD compel you to have your children participate in your rituals/obsessions? If so, and you are interested in participating in a network news magazine program, please email a brief description of your situation to: Nancy Gamerman. Include date and evening phone numbers.

4. People Magazine

A pleasant surprise greeted Dr. Gorbis earlier this week. People Magazine (Jan 15th issue) came up with an article (Obsession with Plastic Surgery) modestly featuring Dr. Eda Gorbis (pp 84 et seq.). It did matter that she was the only therapist covered with a story of her recovered patient. However, the article referred to her as a 'UCLA professor' while her official status is that of an Assistant Clinical Professor at the UCLA School of Medicine. Needless to say this was not a promotion requested by Dr. Gorbis. We at the Westwood Institute thought you would like to know.

5. UCLA Extension Course:

Treating Clients with Body Dysmorphic Disorders

Saturday, March 17, 2007, 9am - 4:30pm

UCLA - Westwood 204 Extension Lindbrook Center Los Angeles, CA 90024

Course Number: PSYCH 848.5 Quarter: Winter 2007

6 hours of MFT/LCSW credit available. Has been submitted for 6 hours of MCEP credit.

It is estimated that nearly 5 million people in the U.S. alone (approximately 2 percent of the adult population) suffer from body image distortion disorders (BIDD). Millions have gone under the knife and millions more may seek unnecessary surgeries to rid themselves of problems that literally exist only in their minds. This seminar's purpose is to equip mental health practitioners, medical doctors, and others with information about various forms of this disease and the early detection methods available. Assessment tests for the two most serious forms of BIDD are analyzed followed by the introduction of established and emerging treatment methods. Participants learn about traditional cognitive-behavioral protocols (CBT) designed by Dr. Edna Foa and the new Externalization Therapy methods developed by Dr. Gorbis.

Eda Gorbis, PhD, LMFT, Assistant Clinical Professor, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA; psychologist in private practice
